The long-awaited redesign of the only mid-sized pickup truck by a U.S. maker, Chevrolet's Colorado, includes the promise of 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel power two years from now. The 2015 Colorado, initially in showrooms in fall 2014 with four- or six-cylinder gasoline engines, will offer what GM expects will be class-leading payload, and trailering capacity of more than 6,700 pounds

A 2.5L I4 is standard, and a 3.6L V6 will be an option. The engines are based on proven designs found in other Chevrolet vehicles, but tuned uniquely for truck duty to include more low-speed torque for power under load. The 2.5L I4 is estimated at 193 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, with approximately 90 percent of the peak torque available from 2,000 rpm to 6,200 rpm. The 3.6L engine is estimated at 302 hp and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. SAE certification of the power ratings is pending.

The 3.6L V6, at 302 hp, equals the power of the 4.8L V8 sold in the 2012 Silverado (although it makes 11 percent less torque), and generates 97 percent of 2012's 5.3L V8 horsepower and 80 percent of its torque.

Colorado will also offer the segment’s only diesel engine in its second year – a Duramax 2.8L I4 turbodiesel already proven in global markets. Australian Colorado owners with the 2.8L Duramax say they're getting better than 28 mpg.
