When selecting a bucket, consider the affect of tip radius. A bucket with a shorter tip radius will provide more bucket curling force, making it easier to load material.

"In this case, if you had a pin grabber quick coupler and you wanted to dig in heavy shale or hard ground, you might want to go with a lower capacity, shorter bucket," adds Cveykus. "It can regain some of that lost tip radius, and therefore regain some of that lost breakout force."
In the end, there are a lot of factors to consider when spec'ing a new bucket or selecting an existing bucket from your fleet for a particular task.
"Don't be tempted to save a few dollars in the cost of your bucket," advises Yoresen. "It may end up costing you more money in downtime and repair costs. You want to be sure to select one that matches your digging conditions."
