Komatsu replaced the PC450 hydraulic excavator with the larger PC490LC-10. The CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011 announcement showed the 108,000-lb. machine with a 359-hp Komatsu diesel engine that is EPA Tier 4 Interim and EU Stage 3B emission certified.

Hydraulic-pump displacement is about 10% greater than the PC450, and the upsized excavator is rated with 10% more over-the-side lifting capacity. It manages a 5% reduction in fuel consumption. Komatsu took hydraulic efficiency to the next level by combining the closed-center load-sensing hydraulic system with a control architecture called variable speed matching. Variable matching automatically adjusts the engine speed to match the hydraulic pump output for both light- and heavy-duty applications.

A new high-resolution 7-in. LCD monitor in the PC490LC-10 cab features enhanced capabilities and displays information in 25 languages for global support. The operator can easily select from five working modes – Power, Economy, Heavy Lift, Breaker, and Attachment – to match machine performance to the application. The new monitor panel also provides operational guidance, operational records, fuel consumption history, and utilization information. It also displays the image generated by the machine's standard rearview camera.
