Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines Version 1.0 Released

RMC Research & Education Foundation releases a tool to assist ready mixed concrete producers in making plant operations sustainable.

SILVER SPRING, MD - After a year of review and a pilot program trial, the RMC Research & Education Foundation is proud to announce the release of the Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines Version 1.0. This final version includes revised calculators and checklists that will assist ready mixed concrete producers in making their plant operations as sustainable as possible and ensuring that the concrete industry remains a leader in environmental stewardship. The release of the Guidelines coincides with the development of a Sustainable Concrete Plant Certification offered through the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA). The Guidelines document, which is in effect a sustainability rating system for concrete plants, forms the basis for NRMCA's certification. The development of the Guidelines is the result of coordination and cooperation between West Main Consultants and William C. Twitty, the primary authors of the Guidelines, along with NRMCA Senior Vice President of Sustainability Lionel Lemay and the input of many concrete producers and industry consultants who provided valuable feedback on the draft version of the Guidelines and who participated in the initial pilot program.

"Never before has there been a louder call for the development and implementation of sustainable practices in all sectors of business, including the construction industry," said Foundation Chairman Scott W. Parson, President of Oldcastle Materials Mountain West Division, adding "With the release of Version 1.0 of the Guidelines, the Foundation continues its leadership in providing specific tools and practical guidance for all concrete producers to become even better environmental stewards." Foundation Executive Director Julie Garbini added "Whether concrete producers seek the full Certification or not, the use, guidance and implementation of any of the recommendations included in the Guidelines will improve concrete companies' environmental operations and will give them specific practices to refer to when asked by community members and customers alike about their own sustainability practices."

The Guidelines document and the related calculators and checklists are available for download from the Foundation's website at www.rmc-foundation.org or on CD. Additional information about the NRMCA Certification may be found at www.nrmca.org. The Vision of the RMC Research & Education Foundation is to support research and educational programs that will increase professionalism and quality in the concrete industry.
