Press Conference Celebrating the Sustainable Legacy of Marina City

When: November 22, 10:30 am
Where: Chicago Room, Sax Hotel, 333 N Dearborn St., Chicago, Ill.

On November 22, 1960, a Who's Who of notable Chicagoans gathered in a temporary structure on State Street to give speeches, be photographed and officially break ground at Marina City.

The tallest concrete structure in the world at the time, the material technology and engineering used in Marina City would set the stage for future Chicago icon's like Trump Tower and Aqua.

The Portland Cement Association (PCA) will celebrate the legacy and contributions of Bertrand Goldberg and Marina City at a press conference on Nov. 22 in Hotel Sax, part of the Marina City complex.

Not only are Bertrand Goldberg's concrete twin towers an architectural achievement and an icon for the city of Chicago, they are also a milestone for sustainable construction. The concrete structure's durability proved adaptable to several re-uses, and its initial concept of a "city within a city" was one of the first examples of sustainable urban living.

Scheduled speakers include Geoffrey Goldberg, an architect in his own right who works closely with the Art Institute of Chicago in the maintenance of his father's archives and legacy, the Bertrand Goldberg Archive. Additional Marina City celebrations by the Chicago Architectural Foundation and the Art Institute will be highlighted.

Please confirm by email or telephone (847-972-9136) if you plan to attend. Archival photographs and video will be available. More information at http://www.cement.org/newsroom/Marina_city50index.htm
