The Tribune rankings were based on a survey conducted by Workplace Dynamics LLC of Chicago-area employers with at least 100 local employees. More than 1,300 companies were invited to participate, and 220 companies registered. Workplace Dynamics then divided the list into 3 categories: small (fewer than 250 employees), medium (250-999), and large (1,000 and above) and surveyed each company's employees about their feelings toward their workplace.
