Shell Rotella Energizes Product Portfolio with Ladder of Protection

Synthetics lead portfolio with new product and new formulation.

HOUSTON, TX - As diesel engine technology continues to change, Shell Lubricants continues to develop engine oils that are designed to both meet the challenges of today and the future.  The Shell Rotella Energized Protection product portfolio is led by three heavy duty engine oils that are part of a tiered, easy to understand, ladder of protection.

Shell Rotella T5 10W-30 Synthetic Blend Technology, which delivers better fuel economy than Shell Rotella T Triple Protection 15W-40 oil, expands the product line of this brand of heavy duty engine oils.  A new formulation of Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic offers improved viscosity protection, and Shell Rotella T Triple Protection, which features an enhanced engine wear claim, completes the simplified portfolio.  Shell Rotella T5 and T6 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Shell Rotella Energized Protection engine oils are formulated with adaptive technology to provide targeted protection across all driving conditions - physically and chemically reacting to the ever-changing needs of an engine.  Adaptive technology consists of molecules that when under load and temperature stresses form a protective layer on engine surfaces, which helps to keep moving parts separated, thus helping reduce wear.

No matter how hot, cold, steep, dusty, muddy or extended the operation, Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic, Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend Technology and Shell Rotella T Triple Protection provide protection in three critical areas:

  • Acid control - helps protect against corrosion from acids formed as fuel burns
  • Deposit control - helps keep engines clean for optimum performance and long life
  • Wear control - helps keep moving metal engine surfaces apart for long life

Each of the Shell Rotella Energized Protection engine oils meets the requirements of on- and off-highway equipment, including the latest vehicles fitted with diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and catalysts. All Shell Rotella multi-grade engine oils meet API CJ-4 standards.

Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic oil features a multi-functional, low-ash additive technology in a synthetic base oil designed to provide responsive protection that continuously adapts to your driving conditions. Use of selected low-viscosity synthetic base oils further energizes the oil's protective capability that promotes fuel-economy performance with no compromise in durability.

Shell Rotella T6 delivers 34 percent better wear performance on average compared to the previous API CI-4 PLUS 5W-40 formulation.  In seven out of seven industry-standard, diesel-engine wear test measurements, Shell Rotella T6 outperformed the previous formulation.

Shell Rotella T6 offers customers fuel economy savings up to 1.5 percent as demonstrated in 2009 on-the-road field testing in medium-duty trucks.1  Shell Rotella T6 can also benefit an engine through extended-drain capabilities, extreme high/low-temperature protection and improved low-temperature flow.

At lower temperatures, using Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 can help an engine start more easily than using a 15W-40 viscosity grade product. Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 can also help protect the durability of the starter and battery in harsh winter climates.

Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 provides protection against shear-stability degradation. A shear-stable product helps maintain consistent viscosity and oil pressure in the engine.

Shell Rotella T6 also helps control the impact of engine soot through increased levels of high-performance ashless chemistry that keeps soot particles apart - up to 36 percent improvement in soot control at typical motor-oil-soot levels.2

Shell Rotella T5 Synthetic Blend Technology is designed to provide extended-drain capability, enhanced engine cleanliness, and excellent wear protection.  Shell Lubricants is one of the first companies to offer synthetic blend SAE 10W-30 and SAE 10W-40 viscosity grade products that meet some of the most stringent heavy duty engine oil specifications globally, such as API CJ-4, ACEA E9 and Volvo VDS-4.

Shell Rotella T5 10W-30 demonstrated fuel-economy savings of up to 1.6 percent in 2009 on-the-road field testing in medium-duty trucks.3 These fuel-economy savings can help lower operation and maintenance costs.

Shell Rotella T5 provides wear control, particularly in preventing bore polish in the cylinder liners. Bore polish in the cylinder liners can result in a loss of fine manufactured honing lines, which can lead to excessive liner wear and an increase in oil consumption.

Shell Rotella T Triple Protection builds on the traditional strengths of wear protection and engine cleanliness in Shell Rotella T, but it also protects diesel particulate filters (DPFs) against buildup of harmful deposits. It provides outstanding viscosity control with exceptional product durability. This technology has been proven in over 40 million miles of durability testing.  In fact, this testing has shown up to 22 percent less iron wear than Shell Rotella T3 SAE 15W-40 and a 30 percent increase in active ashless chemistry to protect against deposits and sludge.*

Shell Rotella T Triple Protection provides on average 50 percent4 lower wear in industry-recognized engine tests.* In seven out of seven tests designed to measure wear in six key areas of the engine, there was significantly improved wear protection.* Maximum wear merits were also demonstrated in Cummins ISM engine test (1400 out of 1400).

Shell Rotella T Triple Protection oils provide triple action to help control wear, deposits and emissions to continuously adapt to the needs of the engine for protection in on- and off-highway applications.  It meets or exceeds API CJ-4 requirements, and is designed to provide extra performance. Shell Rotella T Triple Protection performs well in both older and new engines, demonstrating up to 38 percent lower wear in on- and off-road testing in late-model engines.*
