Build Your Future Raises Scholarship Money

Golf pros and the construction industry team up to raise money for basic screening and training for new recruits in the construction industry

The first annual Build Your Future, Scramble for Skills Golf Tournament, CURT Edition, was held in Chandler, Arizona on November 9 and 10. The participants raised scholarship money for basic screening and training for new recruits into the construction industry.

On November 9, the participants rotated through five instructional stations (putting, chipping, full shots, sand and pitching) each manned with a PGA pro from Back Tee Sports.

The day continued with Jamie Sadlowski, two-time World Long Drive Champion, holding an entertaining exhibition.

Finally, the night ended with a dinner and an auction where participants got the chance to bid on PGA pros to play on their teams in the tournament. Major Ed Pulido with Folds of Honor made a moving presentation and two Folds of Honor Patriot Golf trips were auctioned off to the highest bidders.

Thursday was the day of reckoning with teams playing for terrific prizes. The format of the four person shamble was a huge hit with the golfers. The winning team included Doug Rosentreter, KBR, Canada; Henry Sorenson of Prov; Ben Smith, Yates Construction; Tom Bullington, Yates Construction; and Curt Schnell, Pro with Back Tee Sports.

"Overall the tournament exceeded our expectations. Everything we've heard has been positive, and we anticipate the excitement will carry over to next year's event, " stated Diane Greene, executive director of the Build Your Future campaign.

The Build Your Future Campaign (BYF) is a collaborative grassroots approach to construction workforce forecasting and development that will include recruitment, training, placement, retention and image enhancement strategies. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to lead new potential construction industry candidates as well as incumbent workers to opportunities for job placement, advanced education and training and ultimately long-term rewarding careers in the construction industry. BYF is led by the NCCER and the Construction Workforce Development Center, and is supported by ABC, AGC and CURT. For more information, visit www.byf.org.
