Richard J. "Dick" McCann, founder and owner of McCann Industries, the building supplies and equipment dealer based in Addison, IL, died on March 12 at his home in Wheaton, IL. He was 73.

In 1967, McCann started McCann Construction Specialties Company in a one-car garage in Villa Park, IL with a $1,500 loan from his father-in-law. He expanded to a facility across the street the next year. Two years later, he moved to Addison, then built the current facility in 1976, which was expanded 10 years later.

Locations were added every few years through acquisitions. McCann founded McCann Power and Equipment when he purchased three Case Construction Equipment owned locations in 1995. In 2000 McCann Construction Specialties Company was merged with McCann Power and Equipment to become McCann Industries, Inc. Today, the company has seven locations throughout the Chicago area to service the construction industry with both construction supplies and equipment.

Active in many construction industry associations, McCann was president of both Associated Construction Distributors International and Illinois Equipment Distributors. He served in board positions with the Underground Contractors Association, Concrete Contractors Association of Greater Chicago and Boy Scouts of America, Three Fires Council.

Meanwhile, McCann Industries Inc. announces that Dick's son, Jim McCann, was named president of the company, effective Feb. 21, 2013. Dennis Kruepke, the former president, remains in the position of chief executive officer.

Jim McCann was previously vice president of sales and marketing. McCann is the current president of Associated Construction Distributors International and serves on the board of directors of the Concrete Contractors Association of Greater Chicago. McCann is also a member of several other industry organizations, including Associated Equipment Distributors, the Illinois Road & Transportation Builders Association, and the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association, among others.
