The asphalt pavement industry was saddened recently to learn of the passing of longtime industry figure Jesse Thomas Hughes.
Hughes, the eldest of six children, was born in Alabama on Sept. 16, 1925, but as a child he moved with his family to Arizona. He grew up working on his family's ranch in Arizona and developed a legendary work ethic that served him throughout his life. He served in the Navy during World War II. Upon his return home, he went to college in Southern California at what is now known as Azusa Pacific University, marrying and starting a family along the way.
He spent 37 years working in the asphalt and materials industry for Industrial Asphalt and CalMAT, retiring in 1999. He passed away last month in Glendora.
"He is survived by his son Paul Hughes, grandson Grant Hughes, nephew Dennie Reed, and great-nephew Tim Reed - all current Vulcan employees," said Vulcan Materials, in a statement announcing the passing of Hughes. "Jesse played a significant role in developing the transportation business model for our asphalt business."
