Sam Gehman recently responded to a survey of Rental readers about which attachments are their favorites in terms of return on investment. He notes that there are two McMillen augers in fleet at his location, which serves both contractors and homeowners with light to mid-sized power equipment, up to 8,000-pound  compact excavators.

“One auger that we have is over five years old and has brought in $15,000 with very light service required,” Gehman says. “We’ve made over $25,000 on the two units combined.”

Another favorite from the survey is The Edge auger and trencher attachments from CEAttachments. These are “bullet-proof rental items,” according to Roger Young, manager of BSE Rents Inc. of Tehachapi, CA. He appreciates these tools for their dependability and lack of downtime.

“We had a different brand of auger prior to going with Edge and we had trouble with the drive mechanism,” he explains. “With the trencher, we’ve stuck with Edge since the beginning.”

Young says he has 10 to 12 Edge attachments at his location, part of a six-branch family-owned chain in California and Arizona. With three Gehl skid steers in his fleet, Young says the attachments get a lot of use. “I’ve been with this company for five years and we haven’t had to replace one yet,” he says.
