Despite campaigning against lobbyist prior to last week's election, President-elect Donald Trump has named surface transportation lobbyist Martin Whitmer as head for his transportation and infrastructure transition team. What does that mean for the infrastructure construction industry?

It could mean that Trump's proposed $1 trillion infrastructure plan might make traditional road and highway projects the priority over public transportation.

Whitmer will help Trump select the next Secretary of Transportation who will likely play a key role in administering Trump's infrastructure plan. According to Construction Dive, if the new Secretary of Transportation follows Whitmer's surface transportation preferences it could represent a significant change from the projects encouraged by outgoing Secretary Anthony Foxx. It could also influence which construction firms — depending on specialty — could see a jump in business if Trump's infrastructure plan does come to fruition.
