NJ Construction Workers Protest State's Inability to Raise Gas Tax

Out of work construction workers are protesting in hopes the government will act faster to raise the state's gas tax and get transportation projects working again

Nearly 40 construction workers protested outside of Senator Bob Gordon and Loretta Weinberg's offices earlier this week while others protested outside of other local politicians offices in New Jersey in protest of the broken transportation funding system and the government's inability to solve the funding issue.

Governor Chris Christie ordered most of the state-financed construction projects closed on July 8 because the Transportation Trust Fund was broke. Christie originally said the close could last at lease seven days. Many believe a fix won't be put in place until after the November election. That poses problems for many construction workers who are out of a job and a paycheck as work is put on hold.

The protestors want the government to raise the state's 14.5 cent per gallon gas tax, which hasn't been raised since 1988.
