Thanks to an improving economy and expanded marketing, National Pavement Expo (NPE) reported a 43% jump in attendance at its four-day event last week in Nashville. Produced by Cygnus Business Media, the event is tailored for professionals in the paving and paving maintenance industry.

“We expanded our exhibitor base by 32% this year, so attendees had access to the biggest names in the pavement industry, including companies like BOMAG, Carlson Paving, Caterpillar, Crafco, Leeboy, Weiler, Wirtgen America,” explained  Amy Schwandt, show manager and publisher of the expo’s sponsoring trade magazines, Asphalt Contractor and Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction. The expo also is sponsored by ForConstructionPros.com, the construction industry’s leading resource for news, job leads and buyers guide.

Exhibitors described the show as “spectacular, Five Star, best show ever,” Schwandt reported. “Optimism about the economic recovery translated to a surge in exhibit floor sales. Exhibitors were thrilled with the quality of the attendees and their purchasing power.”

“The buzz was really positive,” commented Allan Heydorn, conference manager and editor of Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction. “For the last few years, contractors were taking classes to figure out how to survive. This year they were focused on how to thrive and grow their businesses.”

2014 to feature outdoor demonstrations

Exhibitors have already committed to 70% of the expo space for NPE 2014, which is scheduled for Jan. 8-11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In addition to the conference and indoor exhibit hall, next year’s event will feature outdoor demonstrations.

Schwandt expanded, “Outdoor demonstrations are the Holy Grail for pavement professionals, but they are challenging to offer,” Schwandt explained. “Not only do we need a great convention center, we need one with a huge, unused parking lot where we can lay down pavement, sweep, stripe and patch.”

The Broward County – Fort Lauderdale Convention Center, which will host NPE 2014, offers the complete package: a great convention facility and a big parking area immediately outside the convention hall, so attendees can easily participate in live equipment demonstrations.
