The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) announced today the winners and finalists for NAPA’s 2012 Asphalt Operations Safety Innovations Award. The companies were recognized at a special ceremony during the association’s Midyear Meeting in Boston.
The award recognizes the development and implementation of innovative ideas that lead to improved worker safety in a roadway work zone, plant site, or quarry environment, and companies whose safety practices go above and beyond normal safety practices.
The 2012 winner of the award is The Lane Construction Corp. of Cheshire, Conn., for constructing a temporary median-access bridge and ramp system which kept construction traffic out of traffic lanes.
Finalists for the award included:
- Brannan Cos. of Denver, Colo., for designing a safety mirror to help drivers see directly in front of large trucks.
- Kokosing Construction Co. Inc. of Westerville, Ohio, for a pickup truck-mounted paint striper that kept employees together in the work zone.
- Payne & Dolan Inc. of Waukesha, Wis., for developing the TRACK book, a formal pre-task planning book that encourages every employee to participate in accident prevention.
- Southern Minnesota Construction, an Oldcastle Materials Co., of Mankato, Minn., for fall-prevention system using a folding catwalk with handrails to safely access the top of distributor trucks.
