Amazon Plans to Heat New Seattle Campus with Recycled Energy

Pipes will send the hot water from one building to Amazon's buildings where the heat will be extracted and used to heat Amazon's building; the cold water will be sent back to help cool the data center across the street

The Seattle Times

Amazon is currently construction a new three-block campus in Seattle that will include three high-rise towers and three smaller buildings. The first tower is currently under construction with a scheduled completion of next year. Amazon is partnering with other companies to use waste heat from a data center across the street to heat its new campus buildings.

The project will use pipes under the street that will send water back and forth from the two buildings. It is believed to be the first of its kind in the country. The involved companies are hoping the process will help them use less electricity and water as well as save money. The waste sharing project is still awaiting final city approval.
