The tunnel boring machine known as Bertha is finally getting a new and redesigned seal system, the first step in repairing the massive machine. This new seal system should be easier to access if anything goes wrong again.

Bertha is digging the $3.1 billion Alaskan Way Viaduct project which is now almost two years behind schedule. Later this month Seattle Tunnel Partners should be announcing a new timeline and estimated completion date for the project.
