The California Energy Commission has proposed requirements for the state's 2020 energy code which would include mandates on solar energy generation for all new residential construction beginning in January 2020. The requirement would apply to most single-family and multifamily homes up to three stores. Homebuilders can meet the mandate by installing solar panels on individual homes or joining a community solar system.
With other states across the country working on net zero goals similar to California, we may see other states enact similar requirements.
Industry associations worked with the Commission to keep costs down as much as possible; however, the new mandate will likely increase the cost of a new home.
