We Challenged Ourselves

Black Dimaond Paving, a California contractor that started in the paving business, turned to Next Level Contractor System to refocus and revamp its business. Today the thriving company pursues relationship-based work while avoiding "hypercompetitive" contracts.

Among the moves to revamp Black Diamond Paving is the upgrading of office hires. 'We hired people with a little more experience, and they cost us a little more but it's worth it because there's less turnover and they're better at their jobs,'says Jeff Reger.

Refining What We Do

New Jersey pavement marking contractor V&V Line Striping has not grown since 2006 but numerous management changes have resulted in increased profitability.

Vinny Toth, with son Vincent Jr., says V & V Line Striping carries no corporate debt, which not only assures survival but helps the company be competitive. 'When times get tough and people have to lower their prices there's no one that can compete with us because we don't have any debt to finance,' he says. 'If we have to get a job in that kind of environment we can blow people away.'
