One of the most-common mistakes occurs when luting the repair. The lute person needs to remove the larger aggregate from the top of the repair, which enables a tighter bond. At the same time, “over luting” will cause large aggregate to roll up at the surface. A good lute man will quickly level the repair with one or two passes, minimizing heat loss and minimizing the need to pull stone from the surface.
