Contractor, Subcontractor Fined in Worker's Death from Wall Collapse

Both contractors cited for failure to prevent illness and injury and face over $40,000 in fines each

OSHA fined two construction companies involved in a worker's death after a wall collapsed on two workers digging a trench at an El Cajon, CA, worksite. One worker escaped with non-life threatening injuries while the second worker died at the scene.

After a six-month-long investigation, OHSA fined Kunzik & Sara Construction for three violations after the agency concluded the contractor failed to provide stability to adjacent structures and failure to prevent injury and illness. Fines for Kunzik & Sara total $41,150.

OSHA also cited subcontractor Southland Paving with seven citations including failure to prevent injury and illness, not having an emergency plan and failure to remove employees from a hazardous area. Southland has been fined $45,825.
