Fall brings cooler mornings, changing weather and shorter days — all of which can affect the jobsite. As crews continue into the season, a few simple preparations can help keep projects moving and workers safe.

Prepare for changing temperatures. Mornings can be chilly while afternoons remain warm. Encourage crews to dress in layers and keep appropriate cold-weather gear available as temperatures fluctuate.

Watch for wet and muddy conditions. Fall rain can create slippery walking surfaces, muddy access roads and challenging equipment operating conditions. Inspect jobsites regularly and address hazards as they develop.

Plan for shorter daylight hours. With less daylight available, crews may need to adjust schedules or improve lighting around work areas, access routes and equipment staging zones.

Check equipment before the workday. Seasonal weather can make routine equipment inspections especially important. Check tires or tracks, lights, visibility features and other components according to manufacturer recommendations.

Keep safety top of mind. Changing conditions can introduce new hazards throughout the day. Make time for toolbox talks, communicate weather-related concerns and remind workers to report unsafe conditions.

Fall doesn't have to slow a project down. With a little planning and attention to changing jobsite conditions, construction crews can prepare for the season and keep work moving.
