Construction of VA's Denver Hospital Could Stop Again

VA proposing Congress raise the project's spending cap by $200 million, move $150 million from various other budget items

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is asking Congress to appropriate more money for construction of the Aurora, Colo., hospital which has been a project of much debate due to costs overruns and mismanagement. The VA submitted a proposal to temporarily continue funding the hospital project but warned construction work will stop again if Congress does not appropriate the funds.

VA Secretary Robert McDonald identified $150 million from various other budget items that could be used for the hospital project but only if Congress raises the project's spending cap by $200 million.

Current construction has been operating under a bridge contract set to run out in May. The VA's new proposal is another bridge hoping to keep the project under construction until a permanent solution can be found.
