Some employees of Caterpillar’s Global Information Services division were escorted out of the company’s Mossville, IL, facility on Wednesday.

The layoffs are part of the first wave of cutbacks Caterpillar announced in September, aiming to cut 10,000 employees worldwide by 2018. About half of those cuts are to be announced by the end of this year.

Layoffs are occurring throughout the company, but Caterpillar isn’t detailing how many employees are being cut at each of its locations.

Brad Halverson, Caterpillar group president, noted last week that 2,100 employees elected to take early retirement. He said that the company would cut another 1,000 jobs with notices to many going out this week.
