[VIDEO] Public Nonresidential Spending to Lead Weak 2019 Construction Growth

FMI's Q1 2019 North American Construction Outlook forecasts total US engineering and construction spending to rise just 1% in 2019, compared to up 4% in 2018

FMI’s Second Quarter 2019 North American Construction Outlook offers comprehensive construction forecasts for a broad range of market segments and geographies in the U.S. and Canada as well as information on key market drivers.

Key highlights of the report include:

  • Total engineering and construction spending for the U.S. is forecast to end up 1% in 2019, compared to up 4% in 2018.
  • U.S. spending growth in 2019 is expected to be led by public investment across both nonresidential buildings and nonresidential structures. Current top-performing segments forecast in 2019 include conservation and development (+9%), transportation (+8%), water supply (+8%), public safety (+7%), office (+6%), and highway and street (+6%).
  • Only one U.S. segment, sewage and waste disposal, was upgraded into our growth category through the second half of 2019. Conversely, educational and manufacturing have both been downgraded from growth to stable.
  • Only one segment in Canada saw change through the second half of 2019: Highway and street was upgraded from down to stable.
