John Deere sets its E Series articulated dump trucks apart from the competition with two machines over 40 tons in capacity: the 46-ton 460E – largest ADT available in North America previewed at Conexpo in 2011 – and the 41-ton 410E. A third model, the 37-ton 370E, shares the E Series technologies.

Aside from size, perhaps the most significant E Series advance is wet-clutch differential locks (cross-axle and inter-axle) that can be engaged on the roll at any speed, either manually or automatically by Deere's new traction control system. Oil in the new Deere axles (designed and built in Coffeyville, Kan.) is independently pressure lubed and filtered.

The new John Deere Adaptive Suspension Control, standard equipment on the E Series, automatically levels the cab to improve stability.

An eight-speed ZF transmission with high-capacity retarder has four reverse gears capable of backing the trucks at 10 miles per hour.

All three trucks are powered by Deere's PowerTech 13.5-liter Tier-4-Interim engine rated at 422 hp for the 370E, 443 hp for the 410E, and 481 hp for the 460E.

A standard on-board weighing system tells the truck and loader operators how much material is in the box with mirror-mounted load indicator lights. A yellow light indicates the load is approaching capacity; green indicates at capacity; and the red light comes on when overloaded. Weight hauled and number of loads are communicated to managers via the JDLink telematic system.

Factory-installed tire-pressure monitoring, also standard equipment, helps maximize traction, tire life and fuel efficiency. The system compensates for tire temperature. That data is available on the JDLink Ultimate service, which will send alerts if tire pressure gets too low or too high.

A three-year subscription of JDLink Ultimate, which continuously collects and transmits machine data to a web site for managing machines is also standard equipment.
