Caterpillar has introduced the C32B diesel engine, designed to deliver higher power density and longer service life for large off-highway machines.
The 32.1-liter, 12-cylinder engine produces up to 895 kW (1,200 hp) for U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final applications and 839 kW (1,125 hp) for EU Stage V. A version for less regulated territories reaches 1,007 kW (1,350 hp). The new engine is suited for equipment such as large loaders, cranes, dredgers, surface haulers and forestry machines.
The C32B includes a redesigned block, crankshaft and connecting rods for added strength, along with an upgraded lubrication system and cylinder head improvements aimed at reducing wear and extending rebuild intervals. Caterpillar also added dual-sensor coolant protection and a maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst aftertreatment system.
The engine is compatible with renewable fuels such as 100 percent hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO). Industrial power units with factory-installed aftertreatment and cooling packs will also be available to simplify installation for equipment manufacturers.
