NC Highway Construction Projects in Jeopardy

A new bill currently in the hands of the Senate would essentially stop any new major highway construction if all the land has not been purchased yet. House Bill 959 passed the House Transportation Committee and now waits Senate approval.

The bill would prevent the Department of Transportation from creating new corridor maps and eliminating the current maps. The bill could also stall future highway construction plans for at least a year.

This bill could affect the N.C. Highway 540 loop extension project in which the DOT has purchased some — but not all — of the land necessary to build the toll highway.
