A Great Starting Point

Annual Pavement Maintenance Product Showcase

So, how’s your business doing? End of year is the perfect time to reflect – mainly because it’s likely you actually have time – to step away from the day-to-day, got-to-get-the-work-done grind that’s been your focus for most of the year. Whether you’re shut down or just slowed down by the winter, now’s the time consultants urge contractors to take a breath, examine your operation, and refine (or make?) plans for your future.

The 2019 National Pavement Expo, Feb. 27-March 2 in Nashville, can help as many of the presenters are contractors who have been there, working through the kind of planning every company should be doing. Other presenters are industry consultants who not only encourage this type of long- and short-term planning but offer a structure and tips on how to make sure your planning efforts are successful.

But that’s a couple months away. Until then, start with this annual Showcase issue of the industry’s material, tools and equipment. You already know what was working (or not working) during the season. You know what equipment spent too much time in the shop or which equipment wasn’t working optimally. This issue provides a great starting point to replace that frustrating iron that was slowing productivity or causing quality issues.

You also know what kinds of work you subcontracted out – and how much of it you subbed out. Is that work you should be bringing in house? Is that revenue you’re leaving on the table? If so, this issue provides a great starting point for you to add new services.

And if you’re looking to add a material line – whether it be a different type or different grade of sealer, an additive, or marking material, this issue is a great starting point before you begin those conversations with suppliers.

Bottom line: Once you start your planning process, which invariably begins with an evaluation of the recent season, you’ll be thinking about the equipment, materials, tools and support equipment you’ll need to bring those plans – whether they are to grow or to be more profitable at your current size – to fruition.

This annual Showcase Issue is a great place to start. For even more options and a cross-reference by manufacturer at https://www.forconstructionpros.com/directory.
