Volvo Trucks has begun on-road testing of heavy-duty trucks powered by hydrogen combustion engines, marking another step in its effort to reduce transport emissions.
The trucks use high-pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology, which enables hydrogen to be used in a combustion engine with diesel-like performance. Volvo says the approach can improve fuel efficiency and extend range compared to some alternative zero-emission solutions.
Hydrogen combustion trucks are expected to be suited for long-haul operations and regions with limited charging infrastructure. When paired with renewable fuels, the technology has the potential to significantly reduce lifecycle CO2 emissions.
The testing supports Volvo’s broader strategy that includes battery-electric, fuel cell and renewable fuel-powered trucks. A commercial launch in Europe is planned before 2030, though wider adoption will depend on hydrogen fuel availability and infrastructure development.
