During a campaign rally in Defiance, Ohio, last week, candidate Mitt Romney accused Detroit-based Chrysler, one of the recipients of the Obama administration's $80-billion bailout of the U.S. auto industry, of planning to shift production of all of its Jeep brand vehicles to China.
But the automaker said in a blog post on its website that the reports were based on bad information because the cars built in China were going to be sold to Chinese customers.
"Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China," the Chrysler blog stated. "It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market. U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation."
