The new St. Croix River Bridge will span between Minnesota and Wisconsin near Stillwater, Minn. Shown here are the piers, cross beams, first precast segments in place, and the extra-dosed towers. The blue structure is a “segment lifter” that lifts castings into position from barges weighing as much as 180 tons.

A New Bridge for the St. Croix River in Pictures
The new St. Croix River crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin near Stillwater is an “extra-dosed precast segmental” structural concrete bridge. Shown here are the first three 180 ton segments on either side of the pier, held in place by post-tensioned tendons. The blue device is called a “segment lifter” and it also supports a working platform on the edge of the segment that iron-workers use to do the cable tensioning.
