PCTC Steps up for Contractors

In Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction's January issue Editor Allan Heydorn endorses the Pavement Coatings Technology Council's support of the industry and encourages contractors to attend a free PCTC seminar at the 2011 National Pavement Expo.

The Pavement Coatings Technology Council (PCTC) has worked for years to help the sealcoating industry and its contractors. From its earliest days associated with the University of Nevada-Reno (when it was known as the Pavement Coatings Technology Center), PCTC has put its money where its mouth is supporting research and generally working toward standardization of processes and improvement of the sealcoating industry as a whole. In recent years under its new “Council” guise it has conducted and sponsored research into claims that refined tar-based sealants are a primary cause of PAHs in the environment, refuting those claims with sound, scientific research.  In addition it has sent members and scientific experts hither and yon to help teach local communities the finer points of sealer and to make sure refined tar-base sealers get a fair understanding in the court of public opinion and local politics.

At the upcoming National Pavement Expo, Feb. 2-5 in Nashville, PCTC takes its industry support even a step further by buying out the entire C-21 seminar, “Sealcoating: Regulatory Challenges and Industry Initiatives.”  That’s the first time anything like that has ever happened at an NPE event and PCTC deserves to be commended.

They also deserve a full room when the seminar kicks off at 8:00 a.m. Thursday Feb. 3. The reason PCTC bought out the seminar, according to Anne LeHuray, PCTC executive director, is that the PCTC members think the information they have to convey is so important to the industry that they didn’t want any contractor to not attend because of cost. And NPE agreed so rather than require everyone to buy a ticket to the 90-minute session NPE agreed to forego some potential revenue and with PCTC will absorb some of the cost of attendance.

So if you’re a sealcoating contractor or if you’re thinking of adding sealcoating to your operation there’s no excuse to miss this seminar. You’ll get an update on current research into refined tar-based sealers, you’ll learn what PCTC is doing on your behalf to protect the industry, you’ll learn what you can be doing to protect the industry yourself, and you’ll leave with a brief promotional DVD that you can use to help market sealcoating to your customers.

No excuses, now, seminar C-21 should be a standing-room-only crowd – but you have to register for the session at www.nationalpavementexpo.com
