Caterpillar will move its global headquarters from Illinois to Texas.
According to Cat, it will move its headquarters to the company’s existing office in Irving, Texas, from its current location in Deerfield, Illinois.
“We believe it’s in the best strategic interest of the company to make this move, which supports Caterpillar’s strategy for profitable growth as we help our customers build a better, more sustainable world,” said Chairman and CEO Jim Umpleby.
Cat moved to East Peoria, Ill., in 1910, in its earliest days. The company has long been known for its Midwest presence, in what is known as the Quad Cities, four towns along the Mississippi River in Illinois and Iowa. The company has had a presence in Texas since the 1960s across several areas of the company. Illinois remains the largest concentration of Caterpillar employees in the world.
The company will begin transitioning its headquarters to Irving this year.
In 2017, Cat moved its headquarters from Peoria, Ill., to Deerfield, a northern suburb of Chicago, minutes away from O'Hare International Airport. At that time, Cat had reached a multi-year leasing agreement with Corporate 500 office park.
Cat did not say what would happen to the roughly 300 workers at the Deerfield location.
