Texas Contractor Fined $767,000 for Misclassifying 65 Workers

Penalties were levied against the contractor for failure to provide prepaid health car, temporary disability insurance and workers' compensation insurance

The Hawaii Department of Labor and Industrial Relations fined Texas-based R&R Construction Services $767,095 for allegedly misclassifying 65 construction employees as independent contractors. The workers were working on the Maile Sky Court hotel renovation project.

Penalties were levied against the contractor for failure to provide prepaid health car, temporary disability insurance and workers' compensation insurance.

In addition, R&R could face further sanctions from the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division and the Hawaii Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs.
