Onboard technologies and assist features that simplify machine operation can be a lifesaver for contractors still struggling with a shortage of experienced operators.

What’s the best way to help new operators build up skills? What about helping experienced operators adapt to new machines and technologies? Training can be time-consuming and expensive — how do you know it’ll truly make a difference? Here’s my advice: Take advantage of your local Cat® dealer’s certified instructors and operators.

Training expertise just down the street

If you’re familiar with Cat dealers, then you probably think of them primarily as a source for equipment sales and parts, maintenance and repairs. But every Cat dealer also employs Certified Dealer Instructors (CDIs) and Certified Dealer Operators (CDOs).

CDIs and CDOs take part in specialized training provided by Caterpillar experts. Their top priority? Passing along what they learn to help your operators and service personnel work more effectively.

Advantages of certified dealer training

  • Unmatched Cat expertise: CDIs and CDOs aren’t just equipment experts. They’re Cat equipment experts. They know the ins and outs of every machine model, technology package and service procedure.
  • Up-to-date knowledge: CDIs and CDOs have to undergo rigorous training before they’re deemed “certified.” But their schooling doesn’t end there. Training for CDIs and CDOs is ongoing, so they can help you get the most out of your existing equipment AND your newest machines.
  • Onsite training: Cat dealers are local businesses. There are 156 dealers serving 192 countries around the world, all through multiple branch stores and locations. In most cases, it’s easy for CDIs and CDOs to visit your site. They can work with your operators, in your machines, on your applications, tackling the tasks they perform every day. It’s practical, not theoretical, training.
  • Hands-on approach: E-learning is a great way to gain the fundamentals of equipment operation or troubleshooting. But nothing beats sitting in the cab with someone who can show you the right sequence of steps to take or the proper buttons to push. A CDI or CDO can provide feedback on the spot and answer questions as they arise.
