Fines for safety violations will increase by $7,600 to $10,000 and up to $20,000 for repeat violators

New York City Major de Blasio has announced the city will more than quadruple penalties for safety lapses as well as conduct 1,500 worksite sweeps.

Those caught with safety violations will face fines of $10,000. That's a $7,600 increase from the $2,400 fines previously set. Repeat violators could face penalties as high as $20,000.

In addition, the city will add 100 enforcement inspectors by the summer and conduct 1,500 safety sweeps over the next 90 days.

Finally, construction sites under 10 stories will now be required to have a superintendent on site.
