Thirty-nine percent of highway contractors reported that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America.
National results of the survey showed:
- 18% had workers injured by a crash
- 8% had workers killed by a crash
- 25% faced project delays caused by a crash
- 50% said the driver or passenger in the vehicle were injured or killed in the crash
In the northeast construction workers fared better with only 5% of workers injured by a crash and none killed by a crash. All four regions — Midwest, Northeast, South and West — all remained fairly close to the national numbers for project delays and driver/passenger injuries and fatalities.
