Mortenson Construction and subcontractor Berwald Roofing face $173,400 in OSHA fines for serious and willful safety violations that resulted in the death of one worker and injury to another worker in August 2015.

Berwald received the largest fine of $70,000 for willfully failing to have workers use proper fall protection working at heights above six feet. Berwald also received two serous violations for general safety and the general duty clause. All fines imposed against Berwald total $139,100.

Mortenson was cited for one serious safety violation under the general safety category with a $34,300 fine.

Berwald has received nine worksite citations for serious violations over the last five years. Federal documents indicate neither Berwald or Mortenson have had any other accidents in the past 15 years.
