Kansas City Mayor Proposes Tax Increase to Fund Infrastructure Construction

Increased sales and property taxes could help fund infrastructure maintenance and repair if Mayor Sly James can persuade voters to approve the proposal

Kansas City's Mayor Sly James is proposing tax increases to help fix the city's crumbling infrastructure. On the ballot for August, the proposals include increases in sales and property taxes. In addition, the city would stop collecting some unpopular taxes and fees.

James believes that the city's infrastructure maintenance has never adequately been addressed, and even though the economy is tough he believes infrastructure repair is a must for Kansas City.

The Kansas City Council's Finance and Governance Committee now needs to work out the ballot language by June 1 to allow the proposal to be included on the August 7 primary ballot.
