Proposed Bill Decreases Gas Tax by 15 Cents

Bill would decrease the gas tax from 18.4 cents to 3.7 cents in five years

The Hill

After all the debate about whether or not to increase the gas tax to help pay for the highway trust fund shortfall, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Representative Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) have introduced a bill that would gradually eliminate the gas tax.

Known as the Transportation Empowerment Act (TEA), the measure would lower the gas tax from its current 18.4 center per gallon to 3.7 cents per gallon in five years.

In addition, the bill would transfer authority of federal highway and transit programs to states and replace current congressional appropriations with block grants.
