Reintroduced Bill Aims to Fast-track Infrastructure Funding, Speed Up Highway Construction Projects

Revamped Build USA Infrastructure bill would move $21.4 billion annually in fees collected by Customs and Border Patrol from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund from 2021 through 2026

Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) plans to reintroduce a revamped version of a bill she introduced back in 2015 in hopes to provide greater solvency for the Highway Trust Fund and speed up highway construction projects. Her Build USA Infrastructure bill would move $21.4 billion annually in feeds collected by Customs and Border Patrol from the general fund to the Highway Trust Fund from 2021 through 2026. According to Fischer, this could cover a projected $107 billion shortfall in the Highway Trust Fund expected to come in 2026.

In addition, the bill would allows states to send back 10% of their Highway Trust Fund money to the federal government in exchange for control over designing a project, approving environmental permits and constructing the project.
