The Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC) Research & Education Foundation has released its latest resource: the "Guide to Concrete Trails."

The purpose of the guide is to provide guidance to the ready-mixed concrete industry, contractors, design professionals, decision makers, practitioners, and public agencies on the design, construction and maintenance of concrete trails and paths that help to improve the transportation and recreation opportunities of the general public.

The guide focuses on the development steps, design parameters and options, important elements of construction from subgrade preparation to delivery, use of various and sometimes innovative construction equipment, as well as concrete trail maintenance and repair. In addition, the guide provides case studies from projects located throughout the country on concrete trails and various construction methods.

Like its predecessor, the "Guide to Concrete Overlays of Asphalt Parking Lots," the "Guide to Concrete Trails" was prepared by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center). Development included review and input from a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) made up of experienced concrete pavement designers and contractors.

“Given increased federal and local investment in recreational trails, funding the development of this guide was a very easy decision for our board to make,” says Foundation Chairman Alexander Car.

Foundation Executive Director Julie Garbini adds: “We received a huge return on investment with the 'Concrete Overlay Guide' and anticipate a similar result with the 'Guide to Concrete Trails.'”

The Guide to Concrete Trails is available for download from the foundation’s website at www.rmc-foundation.org. Hard copies are available on request. The guide will also be featured at the foundation’s booth at the National Ready Mix Concrete Association's ConcreteWorks in Orlando in early October.
