The 61,857-lb. 973D is powered by a 263-net hp C9 8.8-liter diesel engine with ACERT Technology, and has an electronically-controlled Cat Hystat hydrostatic drive system that powers and controls each track independently via a variable-displacement pump and motor. Features include joystick steering, an operator's station with tilting cab, a single-fabrication mainframe, oscillating undercarriage and Z-bar-type loader linkage. A closed-center, load-sensing implement hydraulic system uses a variable-displacement pump that produces only the volume of oil required for the job at hand.
