Metabo, a German international manufacturer of professional grade cordless and corded hand-held power tools and accessories in the U.S., has introduced the SDS-Max MHE 5 Chipping Hammer for construction work and outdoor projects.

“This high performing SDS-Max Chipping Hammer, the MHE 5 (600148620) is designed for scaling, tile and mastic removal, chiseling, demolition and breakthrough applications. The hammer features active vibration reduction and a lock-on switch for increased ergonomic and comfortable operation. This tool rounds out Metabo’s offering of high-performance rotary hammers and breakers,” said Terry Tuerk, Metabo’s senior product manager.

The MHE 5 has a maximum impact rate of 3,000 bpm with 7.1 joules and 9.6 amps. The chipping hammer features vario-constamatic (VC) full-wave electronics, which maintains the number of blows under load for fast chiseling. The VC electronics also allows the operator to control the impact rate and energy for chisel placement or to protect adjacent materials from damage (such as when a damaged tile requires removal for replacement). Other features of VC electronics include soft start and power interruption protection that prevents the tool from running if the switch is locked-on when plugged in.

In addition, there are two LEDs at the base of the handle. One glows green, so the operator can see when the tool is energized and the second glows red, if the tool is plugged in and the switch is in the locked-on position. The red LED also serves as a service reminder, slowly flashing when approximately eight hours of carbon brush life remain.

The MHE 5 includes the tool, a 360-degree D-handle, bit lubrication and a wiper, packaged in a heavy-duty plastic case. Metabo recommends pairing the MHE 5 with the ESA-max extraction set (623271000) and a HEPA vacuum, like Metabo’s ASR 35 auto-clean HEPA vacuum (602057800) for compliance with OSHA silica regulations.
