The main contractor for the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, a joint venture known as American Bridge/Fluor, is claiming Caltrans owes the contractor nearly $50 million, although officials did not reveal what the disputed costs were for. The matter will head to arbitration.
Previously, Caltrans claimed American Bridge/Fluor owed $11 million for problems with high-strength steel rods on the bridge that failed in 2013. Caltrans also says American bridge/Fluor is responsible for flooding problems in the bridge tower's foundation.
America Bridge/Fluor has challenged the penalty, and the issues will now all be part of the arbitration.
