Construction One of the Top Industries with Uninsured Workers

Construction accounts for 11 of the 20 professions with the highest shares of workers without health insurance

Professions in the construction industry have some of the highest risks of serious occupational injury, yet construction workers are the least likely to have health insurance, according to a report from Zippia and its analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics data. In fact, construction accounts for 11 of the 20 professions with the highest shares of workers without health insurance.

These professions include:

  • Roofers - 50.5% uninsured rate
  • Drywall installers, ceiling tile installers and tapers - 49.5% uninsured rate
  • Plasterers and stucco masons - 49.1% uninsured rate
  • Fence erectors - 45.7% uninsured rate
  • Carpet, floor and tile installers and finishers - 45.2% uninsured rate
  • Painters and paperhangers - 43.1% uninsured rate
  • Helpers, construction trades - 42.8% uninsured rate
  • Helpers-installation, maintenance and repair workers - 40.5% uninsured rate
  • Cement masons, concrete finishers, and terrazzo workers - 38.7% uninsured rate
  • Brickmasons, blockmasons, stonemasons and reinforcing iron and rebar workers - 38.6% uninsured rate
  • Construction laborers - 37.5% uninsured rate
