New Legislation May Require Solar Panels on All New San Francisco Buildings

New legislation would require 15% solar space on new residential and commercial buildings have solar panels installed

Last week San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener introduced legislation that would require all new city construction have solar panels installed. The new legislation would require 15% solar space have solar panels installed. The current law only requires 15% of roof area on new small and mid-sized residential and commercial buildings with 10 floors or fewer be solar ready.

Wiener is also expected to introduce further legislation that would allow living roofs on new construction be an eligible substitute to meet the solar panel requirement.

Wiener's proposed legislation would apply to both commercial and residential buildings.
