Volvo Plans to Test Autonomous Construction Trucks in Underground Mines

'We expect to be able to significantly increase our customers' productivity while at the same time improving fuel efficiency and safety'

Volvo is planning to test its self-driving construction trucks in underground mines. The truck was developed in partnership with Combitech and is fitted with GPS technology and LiDAR sensors that continuously scan the truck's surroundings. The truck uses data from these sources to navigate around fixed and moving obstacles in addition to operating fully autonomously above and below ground.

"We expect to be able to significantly increase our customers' productivity while at the same time improving fuel efficiency and safety," said Torbjörn Holmström, Volvo's group executive board and chief technology officer .
