Western Star is taking orders for its first light Class 8 (a size range sometimes called "Baby 8") tractor with the addition of that configuration to its 4700 truck line introduced to vocational segments early in 2011. Available in a set-forward and set-back day cab configuration with several fifth wheel options and wheelbase selections, the 4700 tractor can be specified to suit bulk haul, local delivery and construction applications. It is available with power ratings from 260 hp to 470 hp, through a choice of Cummins ISC or ISL engines, or Detroit Diesel's DD13. Transmission options include the Allison automatic, Eaton manual, and Eaton UltraShift PLUS.

Several new options for the 4700 product line include:

  • Several new lift-axle choices from Hendrickson and Watson Chalin
  • New roof fairings and side extenders
